I started shooting nightlife without a flash and a photographer buddy responded, “Good luck with that!” I remember thinking it just made sense. It has since become one of my most favorite ways to explore the boundaries of my technical knowledge. Climbing on top of dance boxes, balancing on one knee at the base of a stage, swinging from poles, eye level with lasers, waiting for the drop in the song to align with the flash of the lights…its the least complicated way for my camera to teach me all the things I need to know about shooting manually in the dark. An extraordinary, underrated light. I love how the lightwaves are indistinguishable from the sound waves. It’s liberating. Explosive. Uncomplicated & uncontrived. Turns out there’s a lot to be said about smoke & mirrors and when there are no wrong answers, there is only time.
